Botox has been safely used for uncontrollable
eyelid movements and muscle spasms of the hands and neck for
close to 30 years. However, the cosmetic use of Botox was
pioneered by Drs. Alastair and Jean Carruthers in 1982. Today,
Botox is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in
North America.
This treatment inhibits nerve impulses that cause everything
from wrinkles (due to repetitive facial actions), to stimulating
sweat glands and migraine. Given the direct relationship of
these nerve impulses to the direct relationship of these nerve
impulses to the skin, it's not surprising to see the close
relationship between Botox and cosmetic dermatology. |
Botox for Lines and Creases |
|
When we frown, blink or squint, we gather
skin tissue in a fold. Over time, this can cause a chronic
crease that results in crow's feet, forehead wrinkles and
frown lines. Often, this produces a frustrated, even angry
expression.
Because certain muscles are used when twitching or frowning,
injecting these muscles with safe, minute doses of Botox stops
the repetitive muscular action. Once this is inhibited, existing
creases fade and new ones are prevented. This treatment also
shows remarkable results in brow elevation. It can widen the
eye area and give you an open, refreshed appearance. |
Botox for Excessive Sweating |
|
Sweat glands require a nerve impulse to
activate. Without this stimulation, they won't secrete. By
injecting Botox into problem areas such as underarms, hands
and feet, the related nerve impulse is prevented from reaching
the sweat gland. This, in turn, should stop sweat production
for approximately 5 to 10 months. This treatment has a much
lower complication rate than other more invasive surgical
procedures and individuals can immediately return to normal
activities.
