Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful anti-oxidant that has diverse effects within the cell, due to its unique molecular structure. It is an anti-oxidant that is both lipid and water soluble, and thus has been designated as the universal anti-oxidant. ALA was found to be responsible for energy production. It can rapidly penetrate all portions of the cell, providing protection within the lipid cell membrane, as well as the aqueous compartment, and the nucleus. The implications of this solubility are enoymous when we look at the ageing process. Aging has been equated to inflammation, because both processes are mediated and perpetuated by free radical activity. ALA acts as an anti-inflammatory due to its unique effetcs within the interior of the cell. This is the most powerful anti-oxidant discovered so far. ALA can actually boost natural levels of Vitamin C and Vtamin E within the cell, giving further protection from free radical damage and ageing. ALA is part of an enzyme complex within the mitochondria that controls energy production. By supplementing the cell with additional lipoic acid, aging cells increse their energy production, allowing them to more efficiently repair cellular damage and expel cellular waste products. Becasue of this action, ALA has been designated the metabolic anti-oxidant. The use of topical ALA has proven to be a powerful therapeutic agent in the treatment of aging skin. ALA, the universal and metabolic anti-oxidant, also shows tremendous therapeutic potential when given systemically. ALA is extremely effective in the prevention of sequella from ionizing radiation. ALA was administered to victims of the Chernobyl accident, showing a clear inhibitory action on development of cancers. Oral administration of lipoic accid id also shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer`s disease and Parkinson`s, and thus is a neuroprotective agent. Other research and clinical data show ALA is beneficial to slow the process of ageing when applied topically and taken orally. Dr. Andy carries this important skin line and together with the supplements, the ageing process can be slowed down.
